How to Froth Milk

Before you make that next latte, learning how to properly froth milk would be a great idea.

Many people think that they are frothing milk correctly but are not, and the way you froth your milk will make a huge difference in the overall taste of your latte or other beverage.

If you are lucky enough to own an expensive espresso machine the milk frothing feature will come included, but there are still steps that you will need to follow and details to be aware of.

Getting Started

You are going to need a couple of supplies, a jug being one.

This is what you will use to froth the milk, and this should ideally be made of stainless steel. Make sure that you use full cream or semi-skimmed milk and never skimmed milk. This is not the time to watch the fat, and if you want the most delicious drink you need to use full flavor milk.

Fill the jug about one-third of the way full with milk, making sure not to go over this measurement otherwise the milk may end up spilling out the top once you begin frothing.

You may need to get your espresso machine ready by blowing some steam for a few seconds. This just helps by emptying out any condensed water that may be evident so it will not end up diluting your milk.

Frothing

Now you begin to actually froth the milk. You want to get the tip of the steam wand on your machine positioned properly into the milk. Get it as close to the bottom as you can, and you can always move it higher up afterwards, you just want to avoid the milk from spattering.

Now you turn the steam wand on and the milk will begin frothing. You can make it as frothy as you like, but you should generally let it froth for at least a minute or so. The volume of milk will probably be about double the original volume, which is why you didn't want to have the jug too full to begin with.

Check the temperature of the milk with a small thermometer, and it should be at about 70 to 72°C (158 to 162°F). Once you are satisfied, turn off the steam wand and take the milk out.

You have finished frothing the milk and can now use it on your latte or other beverage of your choice.

Enjoy!
