Coffee and Diabetes

coffee girl_120x150.jpg

There is increasing evidence that drinking coffee can help reduce the risk of developing various diseases, one in particular being the most common form of diabetes, Type 2 diabetes.

In Type 2 diabetes, the body is either not producing enough insulin or the cells in the body are ignoring the insulin and not using it properly.

Having Type 2 diabetes can result in a number of health complications including heart disease, blindness, nerve damage, and kidney damage.

This is why anything we can do to avoid developing Type 2 diabetes is of great concern.

With the numbers that are involved in the coffee and diabetes studies now, these findings are really exciting and significant.

Recently, a professor involved in these studies, Professor J. Tuomilehto, from the Diabetes and Genetic Epidemiology Unit, University of Helsinki, Finland, said that:

As Type 2 diabetes rarely appears before the age of 40 and many older people stop or lessen coffee drinking, dietary advice many soon be developed that includes coffee as a safe and useful drink in a diabetes prevention programme.

Further studies on this matter are being performed around the globe, and as of this point, while there is certainly significant proof that coffee can substantially reduce one's risk of developing diabetes, further research will be necessary in order to concretely determine this.
