Canadian Regional Barista Championships

There are four regional barista competitions that take place nationally across Canada, with the top three baristas from each regional competition guaranteed a chance to compete at the nationals, the Canadian Barista Championship on October 21-22, 2008 at the Canadian Coffee & Tea Show in Montreal. The winner of the national competition will go on to represent Canada in the World Barista Championship which will be held in Atlanta next year.

How does the competition work? Each competitor prepares and serves 12 espresso beverages that must consist of: 4 cappuccinos, 4 espresso and 4 'signature' drinks of their own. The drinks are presented to a mpanel of judges and competitors have 15 minutes to prepare all of their drinks. The judges take into account station cleanliness, taste, beverage presentation, technical skills and overall impression.

The Eastern Regional Barista Championship was recently held in Montreal and big congratulations to the winner, Laura Perry of Ottawa who works and trains out of Bridgehead. Laura dazzled the judges with an incredible Mascarpone Macchiato that blended together numerous ingredients which included whipped mascarpone cheese, sugar cane and cinnamon bark! Wow!

To get a glimpse of what goes on at a barista competition, you can watch the following video that was taken during the Eastern Regional Championship.
